The ZIN18: A Nod To the Tech of Futures Past

It’s the age of the artisan and handmade quality is making its comeback into our lives and homes. We are craving the good ol’ days and we are seeing a comeback of some past favorites, like Disney classics relaunching as live-action films and even the return of the Motorola Razr. We are always looking to the past for inspiration.

The Millclock Company embraced this idea when they designed the ZIN18 clock. This cool steampunk-looking tabletop clock uses 70-year-old tech ideas with modern application to create a hybrid of sorts. It uses Nixie tubes, a tech that was popular in the ’50s and was handcrafted by skilled craftsmen, just like the ones used in the ZIN18.

The clock uses a six-tube system with Millclock’s ZIN18 Nixie Tubes. These tubes, however, are made from better materials than its counterpart half a century ago and run on incredibly low energy. Nixie tubes are not a thing you would find in any convenience store anymore, so the new ZIN18 Nixies are made to last considerably longer, being able to run 200.000 hours of uninterrupted time-telling, 24/7 or 20 years.

The awesome thing about this clock is the fact that it seamlessly blends the appeal of the old tech look with the new smartphone era, as it can be controlled via an app, and features a touch-sensitive control panel to set the time. It keeps its time up to date by connecting to the internet via the app and it also has an alarm function.

“The manufacturing of this beautiful nixie equals to art-making, as making mechanical clocks, perfume, or gem jewelry.”

The ZIN18 comes with the option of 3 different bases to fit your aesthetic, polished aluminum, black anodized and sandblasted aluminum. It has different color settings to set the mood.

We are loving this gorgeous piece of tech and we are grateful that companies like Millclock are giving a nod to the tech of the past and reinventing the wheel to fit our modern lives and spicing up our homes with a little piece of the past.

Now this is a one of a kind clock and it’s not readily available in South Africa, but check out these other techy clocks for your living space.
