Screw the Diet, Friday Night. ~ Roadhouse

Let’s go back to the 20th Century & experience the “glam” of the roadhouse, with their Friday Night Neon Lights, burger & fries combos, window trays and double-thick milkshakes. We say this needs to be a thing again!

There certainly is something about roadhouses and the nostalgia surrounding them. The moment you drive in, it feels like you have driven through a wormhole, back to the ’50s with the flickering of lights (not those of a nightclub but headlights for service, LOL). The anticipation that fills the car for the window grid tray to clip onto your window. For all the super-sized burgers and “slap chips” (true to the essence of their name) to be passed on, and that instant cold & sweet taste of the first sip of double-thick milkshakes is the latest Friday night fad with friends.

Bonus: some roadhouses now offer a movie on their big screens for you to enjoy, combining the drive-in feel with the roadhouse’s smell of freshly fried chips lingering in the air.

Here are a few places to try with Friends on a Friday night when you are feeling ravenous!

Kota Joe

Kota Joe is a vibrant, fun-filled experience from the seat of your car. This new kid on the block (opened in 2011) has put a modernized 21st century spin on the roadhouse industry, focusing on fast food and oh-so-yummy milkshakes.

You will enjoy the authentic roadhouse experience, where service meets you right at your car door and their carbs-on-carbs one-of-a-kind menu, with all the trimmings and gourmet milkshakes flavours such as Peppermint-crisp, Nutella coffee, Zoo cookies & cream, Lindt Caramel, and Ferrero Rocher, will have you coming back for more and more!

Kota Joe Roadhouse now has 3 branches; Boksburg and Edenvale and Wonderboom. Screw your diet and do it, you know you want to!

Burger Box

The Burger Box Roadhouse smells like Homegrown Vintage with its 40 years reputation and extended branches. They have been serving Roadhouse meals since the ’80s. These guys know what we want and the meals are great value for money with the convenience of enjoying your meal in your own car.

With 3 branches available, Klerksdorp, Benoni, Rustenburg & Birch Acres be sure to pay them a visit and try the succulent sauce-dripping ribs on chips The Burger Box is famous for.

Something Good Roadhouse

If you are in Port Elizabeth, you probably already now about Something Good Roadhouse as this is the local favourite hang out spot with ocean views, great food and regular live music on deck. This family-orientated roadhouse has certainly not lost its “holiday-vibe” charm since they revived it from the 1950s and spiced it up with everything that the local beach-bums are always on the lookout for to have a great time.
