Riette Delport’s Canvas of Triumph: Defying Discouragement and Embracing Artistic Dreams

Have you ever had someone tell you that pursuing your passion is a far-fetched dream? Well, meet Riëtte Delport, affectionately known as Rut from RUT ART, a talented artist who defied the odds and turned her artistic dreams into a reality, despite encountering discouragement from not one but two art teachers along the way.

Riëtte’s art has found its way into numerous South African homes, making her a household name. Yet, she remains humble and grateful for the privilege of being welcomed into people’s lives through her art.

In a recent twist to her story, Riëtte decided to bid farewell to her pseudonym, Rut, and embrace her true identity. Henceforth, she plans to sign her paintings with her own name, Riëtte Delport. It’s a rebirth of sorts, one that has opened her heart and shifted her focus from prophetic art to capturing the beauty of life.

“I want to paint beautiful things – pieces that resonate with people and create a genuine connection,” says Riëtte. And that connection isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about the joy she feels when her clients are happy with her creations.

Riëtte’s journey wasn’t a walk in the park. Raised in a children’s home from a young age, she faced adversity early on. However, instead of succumbing to her circumstances, she decided to rise above them. It was during her time in the children’s home that she had her first art class, an experience that would later shape her destiny.

Despite facing discouragement from an art teacher at the children’s home and later during art classes in Mossel Bay, Riëtte refused to give up on her artistic dreams. Her positive outlook on life and determination to overcome tough times carried her through.

“I often long for the children’s home,” she reflects. “It was an incredibly enjoyable time of my life.”

Life took her on a winding journey, from being a waitress at a local Spur to being part of a New Age movement. Yet, through it all, Riëtte’s art evolved with her, reflecting the different phases of her life.

So, what brought her back to her roots? “He kept knocking on the door of my heart,” she shares, referring to her return to her faith.

For budding artists out there, Riëtte has some words of wisdom. “Persevere if you want to succeed as an artist,” she advises. It’s not just about creating art; it’s about putting in the hard work, dedicating long nights to your craft, shedding tears, and realizing your dreams.

As a mother of two, Riëtte emphasizes the importance of a strong support system. Her husband is her rock, lifting her up when her legs feel like giving way. Together, they make a formidable team, sharing in the success that comes from chasing dreams and defying the odds.

Riëtte Delport’s journey from adversity to artistic triumph is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and a supportive community. So, the next time someone tells you that your dreams are too big, take a page from Riettes’ journey and paint your own path to success!
