So, we have all heard about the “reverse gear” tactic, right? A practice that has gained a lot of fame. But, have we actually read up on the pros and the cons? Probably not, because, well, for most of the women out there, it has worked, but I figured I’d share some important info with you anyway.
Although trusted by many people, it is NOT an effective contraceptive method. Here are some simple facts that we tend to overlook when getting right into first gear ends in your partner to quickly go back into reverse:
Pregnancy rate while using this method:
22% of women do fall pregnant even when this method is applied effectively. The reason for this is that even though it seems safe, a man may not be able to pull out fast enough. By not being fast enough, it can result in fluids still entering the vagina.
Does this method prevent STD’s?
No, no and NO. A lot of STD’s such as herpes and warts are spread due to skin contact. Other STD’s such as chlamydia, syphilis and gonorrhoea can be carried in precum. Though it may reduce the risks of unwanted pregnancy, it is in no way an effective way of avoiding STD’s.
Other disadvantages of this method:
Even if the method seemed successful before, the other disadvantages also include still getting pregnant due to sperm that may get trapped in the urethra making impregnating a woman more likely if the couple chooses to engage in sex for a second or third time. When it comes to effectiveness during multiple sexual acts, the reverse gear method may sometimes prove to be a little disappointing.
NY Mag reported that nearly one in three women between the ages of 15-24 has used the reverse gear method as her primary form of birth control. Meaning, a lot of women still swear by this method because we hardly hear about the disadvantages. It is important to educate yourself on these types of methods/situations before making a decision that may affect the rest of your and your partner’s life.
Considering moving over onto a contraceptive is a safer option and can definitely help avoid the well-known pregnancy scare. In my article, out in January 2020, I cover a lot on contraceptives, keep a lookout for it!
