Our Style Guide to a Hot Girl Summer

Nicki Minaj and Mega Thee Stallion gave us ‘Hot Girl Summer’ and we’re still loving it, here are the five staple fashion items to have in your Hot Girl Summer collection this year.

The name says it all; quick to get into and easy to style. We have been seeing multiple women rocking these dresses on the street and even red carpets. What’s amazing about this dress is that it can be dressed up or down. Whether you wear it with a flat sandal, block heel or stiletto this Summer, you’ll look well put together.

PAIR WITH: A cool leather jacket which makes the perfect contrast and takes this feminine silhouette to the edge of style expression.

The Cropped Jacket

Styling this jacket is a breeze because of its mutability. A pair of your favourite jeans and a white tee will do the trick just as well as a dressed up colourful version. A cropped leather jacket goes with just about anything while the denim crop has been elevated from it’s neutral base; this Summer go with a custard yellow, stonewash or bright orange option to celebrate the sunny season.

PAIR WITH a cropped jacket with either high waisted jeans or even some edgy sweatpants. The Denim on denim look is still a go in 2019 as seen on Pearl Modiadie.

Local Talent Alert!

Lesego Nhlapo and Lebo Direko are a fashion loving duo who call themselves denim and leather resuscitators. They’re specialists in giving denim and leather items new life and have dressed the likes of DJ Tira, DJ Lamiez, Dimples, Khuli Chana and Mlindo the Artist. Their ‘Art on denim’ pop up event is a hit where buyers can either get their hands on a one of a kind piece or bring their own items for new life. For more info about their brand and to support this innovative black business be sure to follow them on Facebook and Instagram @Lebza_direko (and email them any queries on artondenim@gmail.com).

The Block Heel

The block heel has always been a classic but five years ago, block heel might have made you think formal court shoe. Well the style in which they’re made and can be worn has evolved giving us the feeling of a high heel but with the element of comfort and practicality. Spring is equalled to parties and events, often there are outdoor gatherings to make the most of the African sun; block heels mean no more sinking in the grass or feeling unsteady. Go with a naked heel if you’re in the mood to fit the Spring/Summer 2019 shoe trends.

The Baker Boy Cap

We’ve been fixated on the mood of the 90s for a few seasons now and these caps made that statement last year. They have been a lot more popular this year and a great to add a masculine edge and a tint of street to any look. The likes of Boity, Linda Mtoba and Mihlali Ndamase are loving this accessory.

PAIR WITH a casual outfit like jeans and tees.

Having go-to items of the season on the ready means your looks are always complete while also fashionable. We also love staple wardrobe items because they’re hard working meaning they can be switched up according to your mood from grunge to luxe to 100% that girl.
