Laduma Scores High at New York Fashion Week

Laduma Ngxokolo, one of South Africa’s most loved fashion designers showcased his afro luxury brand, Maxhosa at New York Fashion Week.

Laduma takes on New York Fashion Week

Maxhosa, most known for its unique knitted apparel, has been a proudly South African brand that celebrates it’s people from inception. Established less than 5 years ago, Maxhosa has managed attract stars like Beyoncé and Alicia Keys to name a few. Having previously showcased his work at Mercedes Benz fashion week Joburg and Cape Town. New York is the latest stop Laduma made while conquering the world of fashion.

A Regal Runway Roll Call

Miss South Africa 2019, Zozibini Tunzi, made her New York Fashion Week debut alongside former Miss Universe 2017, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters. South African entertainment export and ‘Prince of Theatre’, Atandwa Kani, walked the show in a regal monochrome shirt worn under a signature Maxhosa wrap paired with funky patterned red pants. Model legend Oluchi also made the roll call.

Maxhosa’s Aesthetic Evolution

Bright and vibrant colours that are true to Laduma’s Xhosa inspired aesthetic formed part of the diversified looks that translated into the New York Fashion Week collection. An exciting addition to his signature mohair textiles were some silk pieces and new ladies’ silhouettes in the form of fun dresses and frilled skirts.

“I loved seeing that he’s now diversifying his designs and allowing for different fabrics and cuts, but still maintaining his print therefore not losing the Maxhosa identity. There was more variety than usual but I loved the show and collection as a whole”  says Mmanaka, a fashion loving South African that attended the show. South Africans were in full attendance, including the entire Consular General team in New York.
