The cultures that are most misused as trends are those from the colonized African, Native American and Asian communities. Knowing when it’s cultural appropriation vs appreciation means, depends on lines crossed and intention of use.

If there’s mocking or watering down in the thought process, it’s a sure sign of heading towards the wrong road.

Representation plays a big role in how brands or celebrities present themselves to the general public. It should be foremost when the cultures of marginalized groups are used, as is presented through this view.

When is it cultural appropriation vs appreciation?

In early to mid-2000, I used to inappropriately adorn the bindi, without knowing and understanding its significance. I would buy stick-on’s, from an accessories shop in the mall, to wear matching my mood or outfit every day.

I learned from a colleague, that asked why I liked them, and my response was because the designs were beautiful. She explained the background and helped change my perspective, which helped correct my uninformed actions. It was simply a matter of appropriation without knowledge, that became an appreciation leading me to stop wearing the bindi.

If you’re fascinated by a culture outside of your own or grew up around people of different cultural backgrounds, it’s easier to know when and how to appropriately appreciate those admired aspects.

So being aware and acknowledging the origins and how it matters, when wearing a traditional garment or using symbols of another’s culture, you avoid crossing the line into offensive behaviour.

Doing some research seems like the obvious route to take when one wants to delve into unknown areas of life, but mostly isn’t action folks that keep up with trends tend to resort to.

We can culture exchange, and learn the appreciation of others.

It’s beautiful to find; there are cultural similarities, through many aspects and connectivity, when making an effort in learning them. Simply put how wonderful it can be, sharing and exchanging parts of one’s culture, with those that take clear steps in appreciating its intricate details with.

The world is full of experiences that can enrich one’s mind, spirit and expand your views, in a positive way. Just mind your manners, and see how much more interesting your worldview can become. We should strive to embrace and understand one another if there is to be a better and unified world in future.
