Fashion designer, business owner, animal lover who loves to travel and of course… good company.
Yes, I know it is a mouth full but when it comes to Carina Louw, co-owner of Milner Fashion House in Pretoria we just can’t hold back. Oh, and can I mention that she also dressed HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco. Read more about this below…
At MFH you escape into fashion… fashion in the decor, fashion in the food, and fashion while you play. Milner Fashion House is a residential home, a fashion studio, and an exclusive event space with accommodation… all of this under the watchful eyes of the cat and three Labrador retrievers.
It’s very easy to lose yourself and forget about all the stress and hassles when visiting MFH… just too much to take in if you ask me. I’ll definitely be going back soon!
I was eager to find out more about Carina Louw, the powerful businesswoman who had a dream and made it a reality. We bring all of our readers into the conversation with a few personal and business questions for Carina.
How did the idea for Milner Fashion House come about?
My dream is to live in a fashion museum! After years of collecting interesting textiles, beads and books I needed a space to display these beautiful artifacts.
I am also co-owner with Natasha Jaume of the fashion brand called ERRE. Our fashion studio is at Milner Fashion House and space allows us to display and sell our latest collections.
I love to share the joy of fashion with anyone who visits my place and therefore created the space so that it can host exclusive events and we also have two guest Airbnb rooms.
What is a typical day like at Milner Fashion House?
(Can you describe/outline your typical day)
When you visit MFH you might encounter models and photographers pitching up for a shoot. You may meet stylists and celebrities bustling in and out to source clothing. Or you might bump into celebrated SA designers that stop by for a quick chat. But most of the time you will find the resident ERRE fashion team bustling and stitching away at the premises.
How did you feel when you were asked to dress HSH Princess Charlene of Monaco for the cover of Rooi Rose magazine’s June 2018 issue?
Simply ecstatic! And even more, blessed when she flew us down to Monaco to create unique garment pieces for her. To dress a style icon of her caliber is the biggest compliment ever.
We also made clothing for Princess Gabriella, Princess Charlene’s 5year old daughter. From tiny leather jackets to cute t-shirts and evening wear, we created a full wardrobe for her.
What motivates you?
Making women of all shapes and sizes feel beautiful & powerful. And to share my love of fashion with anyone that’s interested in learning more about this crazy industry that I am in.
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
Definitely creating jobs. It’s so satisfying to employ women who just needed a bit of training and skills upliftment to find their dream job.
Tell us what entrepreneurial tricks have you discovered to keep you focused and productive in your day-to-day busy schedule?
To collaborate with people from all walks of life on a daily basis. Whether it’s a collaborative project with a fellow fashion designer or planning an exciting menu for a function with a chef.
As soon as you welcome interesting views and even opposing input and advice, instead of trying to do everything on your own, your business starts expanding. Also, people not directly involved in your business keep you on your toes constantly.
If you were to write a book about yourself, how would you name it?
If you can compare yourself with a perfume… which perfume will it be and why?
Chanel nr. 5. Classic, iconic and feminine.
