The craft gin movement has not only become big in South Africa but also worldwide. And although this is a worldwide movement South Africa seems to be one of the countries doing something right. Our “household” gin brands are also being highly celebrated overseas. Inveroche and Woodstock Gin are just two of the many brands being sold abroad.
The festive season is the perfect time to celebrate the great diversity that South African gin has to offer. From gin tastings to exciting gin inspired gifts and last but not least cocktail parties.
The holiday has arrived and now is the perfect time to do some gin experimenting. If you are based in the Cape Town area then, Classic Cats in Stellenbosch is the best place to start your gin holiday off. They offer over 160 locally made gins. You are bound to find something that will satisfy your taste buds here. If clean tastings are not your thing, they also offer fun pairings. While Classic Cats is a good vantage point, also keep in mind that the Western Cape boasts with 30 of the 50 registered gin distilleries in the country. If you happen to find yourself in the Western Cape, treat yourself to one of the many options they have to offer, such as Inveroche, Wilderer and Woodstock Gin.
Now you have completed your tastings and realize that you simply cannot leave without buying a bottle of your new favourite (either for yourself or as a gift). You are in luck; there are so many gin gift options to choose from this time of the year. Many liquor stores stock infusion kits – which I might add makes for a great stocking filler. But you will be able to find anything from combo packs, infusion kits and special edition bottles, especially for Christmas.
If you are a gin lover I am sure you will know how to whip up the long time favourites such as; the gin and tonic, a Negroni, a Tom Collins or our good old faithful… the Martini. Believe it or not, but gin goes much further than that. Here are a few fun cocktail recipes to kick off the festivities.
Festive Season Appeltizer and Gin
This fresh and fruity gin cocktail is perfect for any Christmas party. You can make this cocktail more summer-ready by removing the cinnamon stick.

1 Wedge of lime
- Pour the gin into a glass, top with Appletiser, add the ice cubes, cinnamon stick, cranberries or raspberries and apple.
- Give the lime wedge a gentle squeeze and then add to the drink.
Rose Gin Martini
Throwing out the old and bringing in the new, it is time to spruce up your martini.
50ml Musgrave Pink Gin
25ml Dry Vermouth or Rose Vermouth

Rose petal for garnish
- Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes.
- Stir gently until the mixture is very cold.
