Before Netflix and Chill was a thing, we grew up with the infamous Disney Channel logo in the corner of our TV screens. From Hannah Montana and The Wizards of Waverly Place to The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, it’s safe to say that our generation grew up in the prime time of Disney Channel. But what happened to our favourite Disney stars and where are they now?
The season finale of Hannah Montana premiered the 16th of January 2011 – more than 8 years ago!
The Infamous VMA’s Performance
In the 8 years that passed a lot has changed! Miley swayed away from her ‘girl-next-door’ image and showed us a whole other side of Miley! With the twerking and suggestive dance moves, Miley was very different from her former character on Hannah Montana. She released the songs Can’t Stop and Wrecking Ball, which sold millions of copies worldwide and which she performed at the VMA’s.
Miley didn’t only experience controversies concerning her new take on the music industry, but also in her private life. Her on-and-off-again romance with Liam Hemsworth sparked a lot of gossip in the tabloids, and this year, Miley and Liam announced their separation after just a few months of marriage. The latest is that she is seeing Cody Simpson after her brief romance with Kaitlynn Carter.
The former Wizards of Waverly Place actress achieved a lot of success since her days of playing Alex Russo. Selena expanded her music career and released numerous hits since then. She earned seven entries on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and did collaborations with big names such as A$AP Rocky and Kygo. Disney stars
She also produced the hit series 13 Reasons Why, receiving applause for its realistic portrayal.
No More Bieber Fever
Her love life, however, did not have as much success. Selena was under scrutiny for her on-and-off-again romance with Justin Bieber, but the duo split for good in March 2018 and not long after that, Justin Bieber married Haley Baldwin.
Selena also faced a serious health battle when she was diagnosed with Lupus and received a kidney transplant from long-time best friend, Francia Raisa. Since then, Selena has kept a low profile while focusing on her mental health.
The Sonny with a Chance and Camp Rock actress has achieved huge success in the music industry, having released many hit songs since her days on Disney Channel.
Despite all of Demi’s success in the industry, she experienced a lot of personal issues and admitted herself into rehab in 2018 for drug and alcohol abuse. Since then, she has made a full recovery and recently celebrated being sober for one year. We are so proud of her!
Zendaya knows how to Shake Things Up! She made headlines this year with her stunning appearance at the Met Gala, with her Cinderella-inspired look.
Since her Disney Channel days, Zendaya has starred in The Greatest Showman, alongside big names like Hugh Jackman and Zac Effron, another big Disney Channel Star. Disney stars
Earlier this year, she was cast as Chani in the new film adaptation of Dune and it was also recently announced that she is one of the newest spokespeople for Lancôme.
She has mainly kept a low profile since her Disney days, but has not left her acting days behind her! Just last year she played in The Princess Switch and Second Act, co-starring along with Jennifer Lopez.
More DISNEY BOYS Please!
Cole and Dylan Sprouse
The twin brothers have come a long way since their days of wreaking havoc in the Tipton Hotel.
In 2016, it was announced that Cole got the role of Jughead in the new teen drama series, Riverdale. Cole received numerous awards for his role, including Teen Choice awards. He also starred in the romantic drama, Five Feet Apart, portraying a Cystic Fibrosis patient making it his second lead role in a big movie.
Dylan has been rather quiet since his Disney Channel days, keeping a low profile in the media. However, it was recently announced that he would play in the sequel of the film, After, making it his first acting role since he left his Disney Channel days behind him.
Zac Efron Disney stars
It feels like just yesterday that Troy Bolton was shooting hoops and giving us Wildcat fever in the High School Musical movies. Not only did he portray Troy Bolton effortlessly, but his signature side-swept fringe and rock-hard abs made him the perfect celebrity crush! However, since the end of the High School Musical era, Zac has become more known for his acting skills than he has been for his alluring appearance.
Zac took on a more serious role with his role in the 2010 film, Charlie St. Cloud and the remake of the classic Nicholas Sparks novel, The Lucky One. In 2019, he portrayed Ted Bundy, a serial killer known for the way he charmed women with his good looks before killing them brutally.
On a Lighter Note
But it’s not all gloomy and sad; Zac also took on a role in fun-loving comedies like That Awkward Moment and Bad Neighbors, where he plays characters which are very different from his squeaky-clean Disney Channel Image.
One thing is clear: To the OG Disney channel fans, it doesn’t matter how many Netflix Originals are produced, we will never forget our Disney Channel roots.
