5 minutes with Jewellery Designer Angela Yeung

Angela Yeung is an extraordinary jewellery designer, businesswoman and philanthropist. With a heart of gold and a fierce business mind, I had the pleasure of sitting with her and getting to know this amazing woman.

Tell us a little bit about yourself; who’s Angela?

I’m a jewellery designer and the businesswoman behind the bespoke jewellery brand, Impilo Collection. Inspired by the fine jewellery I found in the East, and Africa’s abundant precious metals and minerals, I studied metalsmith crafting before going on to qualify as a Diamond Grading Graduate – Accredited Jewellery Professional from the Gemological Institute of America.

What is the story behind Impilo?

“Impilo” is an isiZulu word which means “life”. I believe that every life story is unique and each visit to Impilo should be an equally unique experience. A jewellery piece is a personal work of art that captures the individual life story of each of my clients.

Which jewellery pieces are your favourite to make and why?

Out of the many different pieces I have made, I still enjoy making rings because the story of why the piece is desired is an important contributing factor to the final design. It is an opportunity to be creative with the metal and stones to produce grand but intricate designs.

How do you think Jewellery is evolving?

Jewellery design has changed in the last 20 years since I started in the industry. In my opinion, it will keep changing and evolving towards more sustainable options. Gold & platinum are no longer the only precious materials for jewellery anymore. There are many other options and alternative materials like titanium, palladium etc. Of course, the BIGGER the BETTER with the combination of different colours of gemstones.

Any advice for someone that wants to get into the business or become a jeweller?

Follow your passion with authenticity. Be aware that each one of us has our own personal diamond within. Be proud of who you are and where you have come from.

With a client list of famous local rappers, socialite and business goats , I had the pleasure of exploring her amazing collections and here are a few of my favourite pieces
